Launch: Natasha Baradaran
Influenced by the fiery art of flamenco dancing, designer Natasha Baradaran‘s first textile collection is a love letter to lace, transforming the typically feminine element into a series of abstract, bold and non-binary patterns. The line is available through Thomas Lavin in L.A. and includes linens and performance fabrics.
Tell us about your passion for flamenco. I’ve been in love with flamenco since the first time I visited Madrid as a little girl. I was inspired by the strength of the female dancers in their feminine, powerful garb. I always knew that it was something I wanted to pursue.
Was there a moment when the lace idea crystallized for you? My visit last year to Azzedine Alaia’s atelier made me look at lace more closely. I sensed that the delicacy of his silhouette, mixed with bold prints and lines, made for a self-confident, modern woman.
¨Why do you craft stories behind your collections? I see every day how many textiles are out there for interiors and a narrative guides me to create something different–an important consideration for me before I release something new. It’s a through line in a collection, be it textiles or furniture, and creates cohesiveness.
¨What aspect of the collection appeals to you personally? I’m feeling our warm colorways–terra cotta, marigold. I love the warmth of this palette paired with cooler tones. It feels fresh and timeless and reminds me of summers in the Mediterranean.
