Powerhouse: The Life and Work of Judith Chafee
Written by architects Christopher Domin and Kathryn McGuire, Powerhouse is a visual history of the late American architect Judith Chafee. Her work kept a sense of place and environment at the forefront, particularly in Arizona’s desert landscape, balancing views and natural light with exposed concrete and wood.
Working in what was then a primarily male profession, the trailblazing Tucson resident was the sole woman in her graduating class from Yale University Architectural School, where she studied under Paul Rudolph.
Chafee worked with luminaries such as Eero Saarinen, Edward Larrabee Barnes and Walter Gropius’ The Architects Collaborative. One of her most celebrated works is Tucson’s Ramada House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. papress.com
