Built in 1820 for a merchant, and soon after purchased by Governor William Aiken Jr., whose family owned the home for 142 years, the Aiken-Rhett house offers a glimpse into antebellum and post-war life in Charleston.
Now under the stewardship of the Historic Charleston Foundation, the organization is dedicated to sharing the stories of the enslaved men, women and children who maintained the estate, while also showcasing furniture, architecture and finishes from the mid-19th century.
