A Chicago Greystone Gets A Unifying Redesign

The master bedroom exhibits the art of counterpoint: A Currey & Company lotus-leaf chandelier in an antiqued-gold-leaf finish speaks to the wood casings and the tiger-print rug from Edelman Leather, while Benjamin Moore's Midnight Blue carries the tones of the Robert Crowder & Company wallpaper in the adjacent den.

A casual hub, the family room offers plentiful seating with an oversize Prussian-blue sectional from One Kings Lane that cozies up to a taupe-linen, button-tufted ottoman by Jim Parsons. The striped armchair, also from One Kings Lane, references the room's dark-and-light contrast, while West Elm's hand-loomed Arabesque wool rug unifies the space.

The black-and-brass La Cornue CornuFe range inspired the classic French design for the kitchen, which houses a custom hood by RangeCraft, wrought-iron barstools by Casamidy and custom X-mirrored panels on the Sub-Zero refrigerator designed by Kletzien and built by Woodworks Unlimited. The white Macaubas quartzite island is from Marble Emporium.

In the living room of this Chicago greystone, designer SuzAnn Kletzien mixed colors and textures, such as the blue Safavieh rug from One Kings Lane, the black custom club chairs with hide backs from Edelman and the custom sofa Eli-Wyn Upholstery covered in gold fabric from Fabricut.

A pair of tiered-chain chandeliers by Arteriors purchased at Habitatery in Ann Arbor cast a glamorous light over the dining room's custom table and neoclassical iron-frame chairs, all by Bradley. The vintage host chairs, covered in a green-and-blue ombre Lee Jofa velvet, anchor the space while referencing the family room's blue sofa.

Nested in white marble from Marble Emporium, a pair of oval Kohler sinks with concentric detailing echo the organic shapes of the curved Crate & Barrel mirrors, which were painted gray to match the custom Woodworks Unlimited vanity. Gold tones continue with Kohler faucets and Thomas O'Brien pendants for Visual Comfort & Co. from Habitatery.

A 6-foot-long freestanding clawfoot Kohler tub centers the master bathroom. Silvery antique-mirrored wall tile from Floor Creations mixes luxuriously with gold tones: a tiered pendant from RH Teen, sconces by Visual Comfort & Co. and the towel rack--a vintage train rack--from Etsy. The brass-and-glass side table is vintage.

The task: Honor the historic details of a multi-unit Chicago greystone in Logan Square while changing just about everything about it.

Designer SuzAnn Kletzien was up for the challenge, and together with general contractors Marlin and Michael Olson and architect Dan Miller, the team transformed the space for owner Greg Meyering and his children.

Accommodating his expanding family was a priority, as was a more contemporary layout for entertaining and relaxing.

The renovation involved converting the dwelling into a single-family residence, opening the layout of the first floor, rearranging the bedrooms and replacing extensive millwork.

Kletzien’s design for the interiors, meanwhile, incorporated traditional elements that surprise. Trusting the professional’s signature look, the client gave her free rein with the furnishings.

“I wanted a good mix of cool and warm, masculine and feminine,” she says.

Tour the space for yourself.
