On View: Dior: From Paris To The World
This month the Denver Art Museum will debut the first major U.S. retrospective of the House of Dior with its exhibition “Dior: From Paris to the World” through March 3. Encompassing more than 70 years of the French fashion house’s work and influence, the collection–curated by Florence Muller, the museum’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion–includes more than 170 haute couture dresses, plus accessories and archival material including photographs, original sketches and runway videos.
The museum’s Daniel Libeskind-designed Frederic C. Hamilton Building provides a dramatic backdrop for architect Shohei Shigematsu’s exhibition design. The chronological presentation traces the history of the first global couture house in thematic sections, highlighting the contributions of its founder, Christian Dior, subsequent artistic directors, and North and South American patrons. A dramatic presentation of the Dior atelier offers an enticing peek at Dior’s creative process and techniques, with sketches, toiles, dress patterns and lavish embroidery on display.
