“I was having a bad day,” recalls wallpaper designer Penni Auster-Gillespie of the moment she walked into Dekor, one of her favorite Atwater Village, California, home decor shops, for a pick-me-up. “I decided to leave some of my samples on a whim.” Fast forward to boutique owner Isabelle Dahlin on the phone in need of urgent help from Auster-Gillespie’s firm, the Fourth Wall. “They were different from wallpapers I’d seen in the past–the colors, the intricate designs, the unexpected patterns,” Dahlin recalls. With Dahlin’s project ultimately completed in a week, the two knew they were onto something and decided to create an exclusive line of prints. “My mom is a textile artist, so working with Penni felt close to home,” Dahlin adds. The collection, done in a palette of navy, pine and sand, has a sophisticated yet bohemian vibe. It’s customizable, too, and can be a permanent or removable wall treatment. The response has been so good, new designs will arrive later this summer. “I love to just walk around Isabelle’s warehouse and get ideas,” says Auster-Gillespie. “I can find inspiration everywhere, even in the pattern of a bowl. It’s limitless.”
