I’ve long admired the chic, free-spirited interiors of Los Angeles designer Schuyler Samperton, so I was thrilled when she whispered to me a while ago that she was working on a debut textile collection, launching this week.

In her interior work, Samperton has always been drawn to textiles and the flavor they bring to a space. “For me, they define the tone of a room more than anything else,” she says.

The inspiration for her collection came from the vibrant patterns and colors of her mother’s Indian scarfs. “Both she and my father had great style so this is sort of a tribute to them and their wonderful fearlessness,” she explains.

With a mix of patterns — including traditional motifs that feel familiar, along with exuberant modern color combinations — Samperton created a collection that is very of-the-moment and speaks to Maximalist sensibilities.

“I wanted to explore how color can affect a pattern and I was fascinated to see how the same design could look completely different depending on the tones,” she says. “Caledonia looks very classic in blue and white, but quite edgy and bold in turquoise and berry.”

The collection is printed on medium weight linen from Ireland, and printed digitally in Switzerland “at a mill that looks like it’s straight out of ‘The Sound of Music!’”

Samperton credits the California sunshine and outdoor living for contributing to her love of color and relaxed sensibility. “I love unpredictability and things that have a certain patina. I guess those things go with a sort of Bohemian point of view that I find so appealing and comfortable.”
