When Michele and Ryan Tansey began their vintage furniture business, Homestead, in 2011, the first floor of their Seattle home was the storefront—everything in it was for sale. As the couple’s collection expanded—boasting home goods, furniture, rugs and art ranging in era from the 1900s to the 1990s—they unveiled their Capitol Hill showroom and online shop. Ryan says, “We both believe that there’s already so much beautiful furniture and home goods in the world, so it’s always worth considering classic and vintage design when updating your space.” Patrons agreed.
In fact, they were so enamored with the Tanseys’ aesthetic that they often asked if they could buy the plants on display, too. This led to yet another successful offshoot of their core business—two houseplant shops in the city—reaffirming the Tanseys’ ever-evolving presence on the Seattle design scene. As to what’s become of their home’s first floor? It’s still open for business, only now its vintage treasures greet travelers who book the apartment through Airbnb.
