Talking Shop With Ian Stallings
IS: Fine Art & Design, San Francisco
When did you open? We opened the Noe Valley atelier in December 2016.
Tell us about the space. IS: Fine Art & Design functions as a gallery and is dedicated to showcasing handpicked home accessories that represent the IS signature line. Custom-built floor-to-ceiling shelving units allow us to showcase our pieces while still maintaining the open and airy feel of an art gallery. The interior walls of the space are filled with framed works from our designated artist of the season.
Why open a gallery? After a decade of working in the design business and representing a collection of artists, I felt it was time to give back. My goal was to provide these talents with greater exposure by showcasing their work in a public space.
How do you choose whose work to feature? The idea is to curate a different narrative each year and choose artists based on that overarching theme. The colors of our main gallery wall and the work we feature there changes with each season. For example, this spring we painted the wall a light sage green and showcased the work of Davy Fiveash, who creates memento-mori pieces centered around flora and fauna.
