One-On-One With Scottsdale's Oldest Design Firm

The Insider: Tony Sutton

As Scottsdale’s oldest design firm, Est Est Inc.–founded in 1959–has spent decades leaving its mark on some of the area’s best residences and public projects, including the Phoenix Zoo, television sets and local showhouses. Its reputation has continued to build since designer Tony Sutton took the helm as president and owner in 1984, bringing his expertise to spaces ranging from traditional to contemporary styles. We recently caught up with him to tap into his insight and find out what stokes his creativity.

What design trends are you noticing in Arizona?

The biggest change recently is a move from ultra-contemporary to a light, airy and soft Santa Barbara style with just a touch of contemporary design. The look is elegant, timeless and clean, with a neutral palette featuring warmer woods.

Do you have a design muse?

My family and I often travel to Europe, Canada and throughout the United States, so you could say I find my inspiration through wanderlust. Our designs are inspired by a variety of genres, including modern and European styles.

What are the projects that you are excited about working on this summer?

Our design team is working on custom contemporary homes in Desert Mountain and Santa Barbara as well as some traditional style homes in Paradise Valley.
