Maximalism is clearly having a moment. From an embrace of “anything goes” in paint trends to the evolution of “more is more” in bathroom designs, today’s most memorable spaces invite color, layering and personality—and the designs at the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach are proof. Here, we look at 11 imaginative rooms by some of the bold talents behind the always memorable celebration of design.

THE GREAT ROOM

Interior designer Amanda Lindroth channels the spirit of houses along the French Riviera. Striking antiques carefully dot the space, while a hand-painted, patinated wall finish brings the look together. Casual upholstery, pops of wicker and rattan, and a hand-painted striped coir rug play off lush palms and orchids that add greenery to this inviting maximalist retreat.

PRIMROSE PARK

Enveloped in Soane Britain’s Lisieux Rose wallpaper, Amy Studebaker Design’s guest bedroom suite evokes the feeling of walking through lush gardens of an English countryside estate. Woven florals and intricate ceiling details nod to late 18th-century French screen-printing, while a light fixture from Coleen & Co adds to the feminine feel of the layered space. Swaths of rose pink and leaf green run free throughout this garden oasis, inviting guests to cozy up on the sofa or relax on the canopy bed.

THE COCOA LOUNGE

Taking inspiration from the late ’70s and early ’80s, Danielle Rollins Interiors envisions this maximalist gathering space as a spot to meet up friends for cocktails or take a post-swim nap. Serving as an homage to designer Angelo Donghia, his signature mahogany armoire turned “barmoire” anchors this space. In the center of the room is an upholstered sofa sporting Kravet’s performance fabric, a nod to Florida’s coastal indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

MAXIMALIST PERSPECTIVES

Fittingly, Delia Kenza Interiors’ room is about perspective and how people’s experiences help formulate their views about what is beautiful. To reflect that notion, the team brought together traditional elements and modern design. Furnishings, such as the custom Pipe Bench by Dunein, play off the greens of the walls and ceiling. Grounding the space is sculptural lighting by Luke Lamp Co. and a large-scale modern art piece by Jason Trotter of Trotter Studio.

CRAFTING MAXIMALIST LUXURY

Ruben Gutierrez and Kate Gutierrez of Errez Design fashion a maximalist space that celebrates Henry Flagler’s contributions to the development of luxury travel in South Florida. Focusing on the glamor of the gilded age, each detail adds to the overall guest experience and tells a story. Creating a multi-sensory experience, this room features a custom mural by artist Grahame Menage, mood lighting from Hudson Valley, and even a curated playlist for the room.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

Overlooking the pool, lush gardens and Intracoastal below, the ultimate outdoor retreat by Honey Collins Interiors is loosely inspired by the private loggias and verandas of Palm Beach. While the home’s location on the water serves up the color direction, the covered awning provides a sense of privacy and protection. With the Raoul “Miramar” textile anchoring the upholstered sectional, colors and textures are carefully layered to create a maximalist space that is also comfortable and functional.

GARDEN BEDROOM

Prompted by her passion for the outdoors and lush Palm Beach surroundings, designer Katie Ridder sows the seeds for a sophisticated garden-inspired bedroom that is both tranquil and unexpected. She strategically divides the room into three sections: a relaxed seating area, a cozy bed, and a place to work. The maximalist space merges the unexpected whimsy and color of nature with practical elements.

THE JEWEL-TONED STUDY

Lucy Doswell Interiors envisioned this retreat as a quiet escape or a lively gathering space to host guests for cocktails. Mixing “traditional, layered, English-style decorating with an updated Floridian spin,” the team crafted a maximalist space, where jewel-toned fabrics pop off the wool kilim rug. The Italian-style fabric ceiling fixture serves as a playful anchor, inviting you to stay a while and explore.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Creating a journey into the past and future styles of Palm Beach, Jennifer Mabley and Austin Handler of Mabley Handler Interior Design design a memorable bedroom suite. Outfitted with a paneled mural wallpaper called “Tropics,” the maximalist room is layered with furnishings that juxtapose Art Deco fabrics against elegant silhouettes. The space also has multiple places to relax, including a recamier for lounging, a lacquered drop-down writing desk with a vintage rattan armchair, and a gray woven canopy bed from Palacek.

PALM BEACH MODERN

In this maximalist family room, interior designer Scott Sanders celebrates iconic Palm Beach colors and materials. Guided by the palette inspiration from the light blue Pierre Frey fabric, other furnishings like a custom Sacco carpet and a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallcovering also evoke Florida’s signature indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Suede and rattan add texture to this room, while bold art by Lisa Ann Auerbach and The Shade Store window treatments serve as the perfect finishing touches.

BIRDIE’S FLORAL STUDY

Stephen Mooney Interiors creates an eclectic and maximalist room inspired by one of their clients, Birdie, whose love for gardening and traveling guided the creation process. Enveloped by the Pavilion Stripe wallpaper from Waterhouse Wallcoverings, this playful study is the perfect place for friends to get together and chat, while enjoying the room’s lush scenic design. Special attention is given to the Brunschwig & Fils sofa and a pair of French Art Deco-style chairs in a colorful, geometric Clarence House fabric that oozes classic luxury.
