The Insider: Jamie Davis

For more than 15 years, brothers Jamie Davis and Casey Davis have been at the fore of non-toxic paints with their family-run company, Portola Paints & Glazes. The duo hand-blends custom palettes at their West Hollywood showroom and have become a treasured resource for local architects and designers. “We’ve recently added beautiful, soft shades of pink, blue and green. They have an airiness about them that feels light and fresh while retaining a sophisticated appeal,” says Jamie, adding that their intimate approach takes them behind the scenes to projects across the city. With that in mind, we asked Jamie for his take on what’s happening in the region now.

What’s trending: We’re starting to see a shift away from gallery-white walls. People want a bit more character in their homes, and old-school finishes like our lime wash are on the rise. The subtle patina and movement that the finish gives are often more inspiring and comforting than blank white walls.

One to watch: We’re working on a cool project with local furniture maker Stephen Kenn. His approach is creative and passionate. I love working with makers and learning about their processes.

The city as inspiration: Driving through the Hollywood Hills is always a fun way to experience L.A.’s history and architecture. There are some incredible old Spanish bungalows there. Or, grab a bite at Larchmont Village Wine, Spirits & Cheese, then take a stroll through Hancock Park.

Outside pursuits: I love to get outdoors as much as possible. A picnic in Griffith Park, hiking in Fryman Canyon or a trip to Malibu is always a nice way to recharge.
