When Natasha Baradaran launched her eponymous textile collection in 2019, little did she know it would lead to a new tabletop line, Natasha Baradaran Linens. What’s more, it sparked her new online boutique, NB Shop. “If I’d planned it, it wouldn’t have worked out this way,” she says. Here, she shares the story behind her epiphany.

How did the idea come about? I have an extensive collection of tableware, and since we were all at home, setting the table became a creative outlet. I thought, “Well, that fabric would be pretty with those plates,” so I had a few tablecloths made. Then it became napkins and place mats.

Why release them in limited runs? It allows me to do something that’s fulfilling at the moment while helping to keep my Los Angeles workrooms going.

Tell us about the jelly bean-shaped place mats. Who said place mats have to be rectangular or circular? It’s all about fluidity and evolution. You’ll find the shape in my Cuff console too, which was inspired by a bracelet. That’s me in a nutshell: One thing leads to another.

Where do you see the shop going? I’m enjoying the idea of the shop because it allows me to add things as I discover them; items like glassware or plates. It’s whatever I am seeing now and want to share.
