How A Placemat Inspired Nate Berkus’ New Shade Line

Nate Berkus

ate Berkus is at it again – this time with a collaboration with The Shade Store.

Everyone’s favorite celebrity designer — who’s worked with the likes of supermodel Karlie Kloss and culinary personality Katie Lee — unveiled an exclusive collection of roller shades with the brand last month. Now available online and at The Shade Store’s 56 locations nationwide, the line features five different patterns in a variety of color combinations.

The team-up was a no-brainer for Berkus, who often turns to the company when working with clients, as well as on his wildly popular TLC show “Nate & Jeremiah By Design.”

“It’s a company whose quality on every level I respect, so it was a natural partnership,” Berkus said of The Shade Store. “The details in interior design are really important, including window treatments, and this collection represents colors and patterns that I find easy to live with.”

We chatted with Berkus to learn more about the collection, his upcoming travels and his current Instagram obsessions.

Patterns that add a small dose of fun to any room

What’s your favorite pattern in the collection?

The Astre in Graphite. I’m having that pattern installed in a kitchen I’ve just completed at my home in LA. The Raffi and Palmetto are also great choices. Light breezy, and pretty!

The designs were inspired by…

Textiles and found objects I have picked up on my travels. I’m currently on my third passport! Traveling to see the crafts and textiles of the world has always been one of my great joys. This collection represents things I’ve found along the way, whether a placemat from Mexico, embroidery from Southeast Asia, or printed fabrics from Europe.

What’s the next travel destination on your list?

The Alisal Ranch in Solvang, California.

What is one trend you hope never goes out of style?

I don’t believe in trends! I always reach for things made by hand and classic materials.

Whose Instagrams do you always find yourself double-tapping?

Too many to mention! I have even bought furniture from Instagram…it’s a fantastic place to source one-of-a-kind finds and get inspiration.

Name three items that are always on your bedside table.

A couple of books (I’m a big reader); a framed photo of my husband, Jeremiah, and daughter, Poppy; Fresh flowers.
