It’s no secret outdoor spaces have become prime real estate over the past year. From serving as alternative seating options for our favorite restaurants to offering moments of respite from the pressures of the day-to-day, these multi-functional areas have clearly proven their value beyond the traditional sense. Now NYCxDESIGN is inviting designers to make a lasting mark on two historic New York City neighborhoods by pitching proposals for installations where the public can connect and gather for years to come.

Launched in partnership with leading surface manufacturer Caesarstone, the IMPACTxDESIGN competition calls for the use of the brand’s durable quartz in imagining inspiring spaces with staying power in Dumbo Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan. Entries are open through April 8. In May, two winners will receive $10,000 each to bring their respective visions to life over the course of five months. The projects—completed in collaboration with the Design Trust for Public Space, Dumbo Improvement District, and Downtown Alliance—will be unveiled at the NYCxDESIGN Festival in November.

“Public space is one of New York’s most important assets. How we design, imagine, and create these areas will impact New Yorkers for generations,” notes Matthew Clarke, Executive Director, Design Trust for Public Space. “This partnership is just beginning and we’re looking forward to future projects with NYCxDESIGN to bring great public design to more communities across the five boroughs.”
