“SONWAI: THE JEWELRY OF VERMA NEQUATEWA”
The dazzling jewelry of Hopi artisan Verma Nequatewa is on display at the Heard Museum through March 10, 2019, as part of the first retrospective of her work.
Descended from a lineage of jewelry makers, Nequatewa draws on her heritage for her intricate pieces, such as the maiden pendants, bracelets (shown) and brooches that depict Hopi girls or women.
“Her lapidary work often resembles the rocky landscape near her home in northern Arizona,” explains curator Diana Pardue. “The complex inlay she so carefully builds shows a perfection of technical skill as well as a great ability to combine myriad colors.”
