Working with architect Jeff L. Ray and builder Roy Wissel, interior designer Jill Shevlin reimagined the layout and detailing of a Vero Beach home. Custom millwork was added to the walls and ceiling in the great room, where a neutral palette unifies the space. Shevlin reupholstered the owners' existing lounge chairs through K&F European Upholstery using an Ian Sanderson check from Jerry Pair; the Nina Campbell floral pillow print is from Ammon Hickson, and the carpet is from Glen's Carpet in New York. A coffee table from Art Applications in Boston adds a splash of muted color.

traditional den casual dining space...

In lieu of a formal dining room, Shevlin created a casual dining space in the den, where she placed chairs from Hickory Chair in Hickory, North Carolina, around a table from Hickory White in Charlotte, North Carolina. The designer then chose a Phillip Jeffries grass cloth for the wall behind the sofa and a custom red shade by Benjamin Moore to accent the architectural detailing. The Harcourt area rug is from Curren Carpet, and Cowtan & Tout fabric decorates the Roman window shades, lounge chair and accent pillows.

Shevlin gutted and reconfigured the kitchen to refresh the awkward, outdated layout. In the new, crisp space, Wood-Mode cabinets by Dawn Wallace Designs contrast with honed-black granite countertops from Macata Stone. The Lorts barstools are upholstered with Galbraith & Paul fabric from David Sutherland, and the pendants are by Barn Light Electric

traditional dining area vintage ice...

A marble-topped bistro table from Sarreid, Ltd. in Wilson, North Carolina, and two vintage ice cream chairs create an intimate breakfast area. Cheerful pillows clad in a Groundworks' polka-dot fabric from Lee Jofa accent the banquette, which features a cushion upholstered in a textile from Walfab. The wood shutters are from For Designers Only.

infinity pool sitting area patio...

Outdoor living was a high priority for the homeowners, who spend considerable time on their expansive lanai. To ease the transition from the landscaping to the stunning environs, the infinity pool was darkened to match the surrounding estuary. Palm trees and tall shrubbery offer both shade and privacy.

In the master bedroom, a set of French doors and two windows allow for stunning water views framed by Opuzen drapery fabric from Ammon Hickson. Shevlin went with a pale palette throughout the room, which she furnished with a Hickory Chair bed flanked by table lamps from the Jill Shevlin Design store. A bench from Noir in Gardena, California, is upholstered in Schumacher fabric, the armchairs and ottoman wear Jane Churchill fabric from Cowtan & Tout, and the Saxony area rug is from Curren Carpet.

new master closet white island...

Originally several smaller closets, Shevlin and the team reconfigured the layout of the master closet to create a more practical open room and then installed custom cabinetry fabricated by Premier Millwork & Cabinets. Above the center island is an open lantern by Visual Comfort & Co.; the runners are from the Jill Shevlin Design store

The master bathroom was gutted to create a classic look with clean lines and a neutral palette. A sleek white Empire tub by Waterworks is the centerpiece for the space, which is accented with a wallcovering in China Seas' Sigourney taupe on white.

traditional loggia outdoor sitting area...

To create a space that could be used year-round, Shevlin designed the loggia with comfort and conversation in mind. Using pieces from the homeowners' collection, an intimate seating area is situated alongside a new custom outdoor fireplace with a faux-stone veneer. Accents such as the oversize glass-and-metal lanterns and the indoor-outdoor rug join a reclaimed-wood coffee table purchased from Jeffan in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

It was all about the views for this South Florida residence. “The home backs up to the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and has these stunning views of the estuary,” says the homeowner. “It’s what sold us on the home and allowed us to look past the other design flaws.”

Of the flaws, there were many, including the fact that the original layout obstructed the interior water views and the architectural detailing was limited, if not nonexistent, in many areas. “The home just felt unfinished and awkward,” adds the homeowner. Enter designer Jill Shevlin and architect Jeff Ray, who were able to rework the layout by combining rooms, removing walls and adding symmetry to the otherwise off-balance design, creating an interior that’s at once elegant and casual. “The layout is so much more amenable to the homeowners’ lifestyle,” says Ray. “Plus, it takes advantage of the home’s biggest draw: the estuary views.”

Post-renovation, the homeowners spend most of their time on the outdoor loggia overlooking their redesigned infinity pool, which blends seamlessly with the brackish water that winds among the mangroves. “That view, especially at sunset, is our most favorite part of the home,” the homeowner says.
