Talking Shop With Isabelle Dahlin

Dekor

When did you open? We welcomed our first customers to our store in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park in 2011, but we recently moved into our new shop in Atwater Village.

What’s the concept behind Dekor? I’ve always felt that if you’re happy in your home, you take that feeling with you when you go out in the world, so I want to have something for everyone while keeping a wide price point.

How does the store reflect your own style? I grew up in Sweden and am very influenced by Scandinavian design. Growing up where it’s very dark half the year makes you realize that how you light a room is key! I’m also very eclectic, and I like to mix midcentury pieces with antiques. Plus, I go on more shopping trips now, so we have more items from Europe and Morocco.

Share what’s new for spring. We just got a container from Eastern Europe filled with amazing farm tables and benches for alfresco dining. And I’m designing a metal daybed that’s lovely for inside or outside.

Tell us about your Ojai outpost. I opened Dekor & Co. in Ojai about three years ago. It’s a huge space–a former car repair shop. It has the same feeling as my L.A. space but we have more lifestyle items, like skin care, clothing and even a tea bar.
