The Warehouse, New York

In Chelsea, tucked between the High Line and some of New York City’s most progressive art galleries, is a new 85,000-square-foot project by Morris Adjmi Architects. The interior remains of a 1914 apparel-manufacturing building will be cleaned out while its brick-and-mortar exterior will be preserved, a project that will rebirth the structure into The Warehouse. A three-story glass-and-steel cantilever-like addition will grow from the top of the original footprint, providing upper-floor office space, and the ground floor will house art galleries and retail space. The preservation of the building is close to the heart of James Haddad–the principal of the property’s development firm, Elijah Equities–whose grandfather’s menswear company was once a tenant in the space. When completed in 2019, its rooftop will be the place to catch extraordinary views of the High Line.
