An Athens, Georgia, company best known for its splendid repurposed vintage textiles has innovated one step further, recently launching the Wormley by Aloka collection. Comprising a 15-piece array of modern frames in hardy walnut, ash, maple and teak, the line revives the work of Edward Wormley, a midcentury master who embraced modern furniture silhouettes without abandoning historical precedent.
“We call it ‘high-note craft,’ ” says Aloka founding partner Amy Flurry. “There is a level of familiarity, sophistication and surprise that sets these pieces apart.” Flurry and her team took the opportunity to pore over Wormley’s 2,500-piece archive for Dunbar, where the maestro served as design director for more than 30 years—always with an eye toward longevity and adaptation.
Thus, Aloka’s contemporary take on Wormley’s upholstery—whether tenderly washed or overdyed with botanical pigments—is simply a continuation of his creative spirit.
