15 Bright & Airy Sunrooms To Enjoy All Year Round
Whether used for drinking your morning coffee, reading a book or taking an afternoon nap during a rain shower, a sunroom is ideal for relaxation. Settle in and peruse our top picks below.
BLUESTONE BEAUTY
A bluestone-clad fireplace formed by 12-by-18-inch tiles is the centerpiece of the sunroom. The all-weather nautical-rope Rutherford sofa from RH is upholstered in a textured linen-weave Perennials fabric. Cowhide chairs are from Jayson Home, as is the teardrop side table.
ROOM WITH A VIEW
The sunroom serves as a flexible indoor-outdoor family space with all-new custom woodwork. The pillow and cushion fabrics are John Robshaw, and the wallpaper is Hygge & West. Above the space is a custom lantern by The Urban Electric Co.
LAKE ESCAPE
Navy blue velvet sofas from RH form the center seating area of three conversation groupings in the sunroom, which offers expansive views of Lake Austin. The Oriental rug is from Esmaili Rugs, the antique Chinese garden stools are from the homeowners’ collection and the pair of monumental 18th-century antique temple jars is from Kneedler-Fauchere.
FIT FOR A STAR
Sheer Roman shades in a Rogers & Goffigon fabric with Rose Tarlow Melrose House trim grace the sun room windows. The custom sectional is in a Glant linen; the custom ottoman’s top is stitched in a pattern that matches its diamond-shaped wood base. Adding a whimsical touch is the sconce from Coup D’Etat in San Francisco.
SWIMMING IN SUNLIGHT
English country houses and their beguiling mix of old and new inspired designer Tatum Kendrick’s take on her longtime clients’ Hamptons home. In the sun-dappled living room, she juxtaposed a Noguchi sofa from Design Within Reach with a custom neoclassical-style chaise. The pattern of the Arabescato marble fireplace surround echoes the bust of Julius Caesar from 1stdibs.
CALIFORNIA DREAMING
The covered California room gives owners Katie and John Mardikian additional space to entertain or relax with their kids in front of the fire. Swivel chairs, a sofa and a coffee table, all by Sunset West, sit atop a jute rug from Jaipur Living.
PATTERN PLAY
Architect Stephen Potters designed floor-to-ceiling windows and designer Brittany Bromley coated the frames in Farrow & Ball’s Railings to showcase both sunny and snowy days. Thanks to raised custom sofas and an expandable corner antique table, the room transforms easily into a fun dining space. Pattern play through armchairs upholstered in a Fermoie fabric and Hodsoll McKenzie-covered poufs add a bit of whimsy.
TERRACE TIME
A sunken terrace at the property’s entry creates a cosseted feel different from the home’s water-facing decks. The Formations furnishings from Jennifer West add up to a cozy, inviting outdoor room.
DIVINE IN PINE
In the sun room, the knotty pine paneling, Roman Thomas bouclé-covered sofa and petrified wood stump tables from Primitive bring to mind a 1940s weekend lodge. Architect Steve Kadlec designed the bleached oak cabinet, which was fabricated by ADM Custom Cabinets Chicago, Inc.
BLUE AND WHITE DELIGHT
Olive Leaf dual-mount chandeliers from Shades of Light line the sun room ceiling. Louis XVI armchairs from Country French Interiors in Schumacher’s blush-tone Garden of Persia fabric counter the blue-and-white palette: a lamp from Nick Brock Antiques, Mandeville draperies from Schumacher’s Timothy Corrigan Collection and the sofa in Villa Nova’s Atlantis Glacier material from Culp Associates.
BUT MAKE IT RESORT
Livability reigns supreme in the sun room. The custom sofa is upholstered in a Pindler hard-wearing Sunbrella fabric. A mix of materials, thanks in part to the McGuire lounge chair and woven-rope Palecek coffee table, lends warmth and texture.
TUFT LUCK
“We wanted spaces within spaces,” architect Phillip Liederbach says of the sun room. Vibrant pillows, an antique rug from Rouzati Rugs and Surya ottomans pop against the custom banquette’s tufted linen and velvet Perennials fabrics in warm gray hues.
PERFECTLY PARISIAN
In the sun room, Lonergan added natural textures: Pierre Jeanneret’s teak-and-cane armchair, a tree-root coffee table and replicas of Jean Royere’s iconic polar bear sofa and chair from M Naeve. The hand-molded plaster chandelier is Stephen Antonson; the Serge Mouille three-arm floor lamp is from Design Within Reach.
JOINING SPACES
Kotchen designed the sun room to be used year-round with doors that open fully to the adjoining patio. A Rene Cazares swivel chair is joined by Perennials-upholstered ottomans from Disc Interiors and a sofa from Vanguard Furniture. On the wall is a photograph of Nantucket by James Ogilvy alongside a trio of Lostine pendants.
SCREEN TIME
Dubbed the “relaxation zone,” the sun room is where homeowner Allison Smith regularly cocoons, with the screened space allowing for bug-free enjoyment of the outdoors (a worthy concern in the South). With the exception of the slatted Janus et Cie coffee table, all furnishings in the space were repurposed from the family’s previous residence.
