A South Beach Apartment Goes Graphic

contemporary black and white living room oasis

In the kitchen, metal barstools from A+R in Los Angeles pull up to a custom island table with a Dekon top. A TruLine linear LED light by Pure Lighting partially frames the table; behind it is a 1950s-style pendant from Sit Down New York. Italian men’s shirting fabric from B&J Fabrics in New York was artfully transformed into draperies.

Interior designer Christopher Coleman and fashion designer Angel Sanchez see things in black and white — at least for the interiors of their South Beach duplex apartment.

“Angel likes Armani’s palette–black, white and gray–which is very soothing,” says Coleman, a designer known for bold use of ebullient color.

The apartment they designed breaks dramatically from the South Florida oasis dual traditions of Lily Pulitzer colors and white-on-white, explains Coleman.

The palette also anchors their largely monochromatic art and creates a stylish effect particularly suited to create a sense of relaxation during the evenings, when the pair are most often at home.

Ever resourceful, Coleman–who built his early career dumpster diving for finds he’d then refurbish and repurpose–drew from the couple’s existing possessions that were dispersed throughout various homes, their respective offices, storage lockers and The Christopher Coleman Collection, the men’s Hudson, New York, gallery.

Also unconventional were some materials. Coleman and Sanchez dressed windows in men’s shirting fabric and deployed Dekon on a kitchen island that doubles as dining table. All the black and white discipline, however, is tweaked by a Calderesque stabile downstairs and a red table upstairs.
