Bright Colors, Bold Accents Dot This Designer’s Home

In the kitchen, just off the family room and dining area, Schumacher updated the central island with a white countertop and brass drawer pulls by Lew’s Hardware. Stools by Safavieh offer seating in the light-filled space. The flooring is white oak finished with a combination stain that includes mahogany and black.

Sometimes everything falls into place. It did for Denver-based designer Andrea Monath Schumacher, her husband, Jesse, and their two children, Calvin and Charley.

“We live in Bow Mar,” Schumacher says. “We’d always see this 1950s ranch-style house in the neighborhood, and we fell in love with it. I decided to knock on the door one day and the owner answered. We started chatting, and she invited me in for tea. I told her I loved her home and that if she ever wanted to sell, I’d be interested in buying. She called three years later.”

After Schumacher learned the owner was ready to sell, the designer and her husband purchased the midcentury residence. Schumacher then arranged the rooms with the beloved furniture pieces, fabrics, artworks and accessories she has carefully collected over the years.

She hung vibrant selections of Chinoiserie wallpaper in the entry, the master bedroom and the office. French sconces from the 1940s that are gilded and cobra-shaped adorn the entry, while a gilded table lamp in the form of a bird makes a statement in the family room.

“I love pattern and anything that has an animal shape,” she says.
