A Chicago Victorian Provides Creative Inspiration

A welcoming backdrop for family life, beautifully appointed spaces for formal dinner parties and rooms that inspire creativity. Such was the laundry list of requests designers Tom Konopiots and Michael Stornello took on while renovating an 1880s Victorian home in Chicago.

“Stylistically, the Yee family wanted a home that felt collected, with a mix of new, vintage and antique pieces,” Konopiots says.

In the living room, the design duo merged an antique-style rug with a set of modern club chairs and a forged iron-and-glass coffee table. Italian reproduction chairs dressed in luscious Fortuny mohair, balanced with a modern rectangular wood table extend the collected concept to the dining room.

Additionally, because the homeowner and his three children are accomplished pianists, a carefully curated music room was configured to accommodate a baby grand piano along with a midcentury-modern settee. Playful stripes on the chairs and bold orange cushions in the family room and kitchen are reminders that children live there.
