Sometimes, if you're lucky, the magic of a home is already there, just waiting to be uncovered. Such was the case with this Healdsburg, California, property, which designer Lauren Nelson and architect Monica Ream reimagined as a cozy, kid-friendly summer retreat primed for family memory-making. Nelson and Ream join the LUXE Connect Podcast to take listeners behind the scenes of the project.

The second episode of LUXE Connect, hosted by Mary Jo Bowling, features an exclusive look at the home’s renovation. Although technically built in the early 1990s, the abode contained an array of outdated elements that begged to be transformed. (We’re looking at you, carpeted bathroom.) Beyond the dated details, the homeowner also wanted the space to support family life, with materials and layouts carefully considered for a retreat alive with Popsicle-laden children running from the pool to the kitchen and back all summer long. “We were looking through the lens of trying to make this home have patina already so that the more patina it gets, the more beautiful it gets,” shares Nelson. Each room showcases a quiet allure, deftly merging comfort with style.

The home sits in California’s North Bay, and that location was certainly part of the original draw. Healdsburg lies at the intersection of three of the state’s great wine regions—Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley. Here, nature makes itself known, with the sound of buzzing bees and frolicking frogs constantly in the background. Cheers to that.
