In the dining room’s formal area, a pair of Tony Duquette sunburst chandeliers from Remains Lighting illuminate the custom ebonized-wood table from Plantation in Los Angeles and chairs from The Charles Stewart Company. The artwork over the fireplace is from Art Basel in Miami Beach.

Michelle Williams Designs A Chicago Home Featuring High Style

They wanted this home to be very California cool with little touches of industrial,” explains Michelle Williams of the sprawling Chicago-area residence she and architect William Bickford designed for their clients.

Located in Highland Park, the property was stitched together from several smaller parcels. “Our intent was to design this new house with old features that seem to flow like it has always been there,” Bickford says.

The limestone-clad manse now features a series of French doors that span the front of the house, its second floor dotted with low dormers set into the slate gable roof.

The industrial touches come into play inside, where visitors can find exposed beams with decorative tie-backs, backsplash tile with an embedded safety glass feature in the bar, and a curvaceous steel staircase that leads from the husband’s clubby office to the master suite.

“For such a large house, it’s so warm and inviting,” Williams explains. “People always want to hang out there.”
