Founder, Mayware Ceramics

It was in a college ceramics class 11 years ago where Jeffrey Ryan May discovered what he calls his “fire.” Drawn to the medium’s ability to be physically and mentally engaging, he spent a decade honing his pottery skills, going so far as to apprentice with California-based master potter Frank Massarella. Two years ago, the downtown Phoenix resident finally pursued his passion full time and founded his Mayware Ceramics studio, handcrafting plates, vases, bowls and cups with a rustic, organic look. “I put a lot of labor and knowledge into each and every individual piece,” May says. “I like to believe they enhance your daily experience.” May took a break from creating his wares to share some of his favorite spots in the Valley with Luxe.

9 a.m. Start the day with a run on the Murphy Bridle Path along North Central Avenue, which is near my home studio. I am a runner and often take my dogs on sunrise trail runs.

10 a.m. Stop by Dick’s Hideaway on 16th Street for an authentic New Mexican breakfast–the quality of food and service is always on point. I usually go with the enchiladas and eggs.

11 a.m. Next, check out Local Nomad, For The People and Phoenix General. These lifestyle stores all have a rustic, organic-meets-modern feel to them, to which I find myself drawn. Each shop carries many artists from Arizona as well as some up-and-coming ones out of the Bay Area and New York.

2 p.m. Head to North 7th Street for lunch at Otro Cafe. I’m a big fan of the carne asada burrito, but there isn’t anything on the menu that disappoints.

3 p.m. If you’re in town when it’s open, browse Sweet Salvage on North 7th Avenue. This vintage marketplace offers collectible items and is open the third Thursday through Sunday of each month. Each market is themed, and there are always treasures to find.

6 p.m. Enjoy a pint in the beer garden at Ocotillo. The restaurant has a solid craft beer selection in addition to plenty of light options.

7 p.m. Grab a table on the patio at Pizzeria Bianco. The food is arguably the best in town, and the staff knows my wife and me by name and treats us like family.

9 p.m. After your last slice of pizza, go next door to Bar Bianco for an espresso and a nightcap.
