For Kala, “ordinary” doesn’t exist—especially at the company’s debut Miami showroom. The luxury materials lab and library defies the standard flooring-and-tile store formula with a speakeasy-inspired setting that uniquely caters to design professionals in search of rare, globally sourced selections. Here, founder Luis Prado explains how Kala is pushing the limits.
How would you explain the location’s design?
Kala isn’t your typical showroom. It has a hidden, intimate feel meant to spark curiosity from the moment you walk in. More than that, it’s built as a creative lab for designers and architects. The layout is intentionally designed for you to spread out mood boards, compare resources and build out a full concept.
What are some of Kala’s standout materials?
Our curated selection includes custom terrazzo blends, which are perfect for seamless indoor-outdoor spaces. We also carry ivory travertine from Mexico, known for its warm tone and subtle movement, and Ocean Blue marble from Italy with fluid veining that evokes water. Among our most unique offerings are natural curved wood planks: Each follows the tree’s original shape for a truly sculptural material.
What trends are you currently seeing?
A shift toward organic, tactile elements, especially for outdoor spaces. For instance, a natural stone, Sukabumi, has become popular for Miami pools. It looks incredible when wet, has a subtle green or beige tone and gives a resort-like feel.
