WARM AND TONAL
The Great Plains cotton blend on the chairs from Modernica in Los Angeles echoes the sky seen through the study’s clerestory, while the black Edelman leather on the custom sofa serves as a grounding element. Designer Alana Homesley complements the seating’s midcentury vibes with a Helios chandelier from Holly Hunt in Los Angeles. For organic touches, there is a Shiir carpet and a Goby Walnut slab on the coffee table.
SLEEP SERENE
Crowning the client’s bedroom is a handmade cane bed from Radnor. Designer Gil Melott chose Benjamin Moore’s restful Knoxville Gray for the walls to encourage his client “to sleep in until 6 a.m.,” he jokes. The nightstand and lamp are Ethan Allen and Regina Allen, respectively, and the paper paintings are by Richard Talaber from Circa Modern.
ART INFUSION
Beneath the owners’ chandelier, Miriam and James Duncan paired Design Within Reach’s Hoffmann side chairs with custom head chairs around a midcentury dining table from 1stdibs. Centering the built-in bookcase is “Love Is In The Air” by Pedro Ruiz from Beatriz Esguerra Art in Bogotá, Colombia.
SCANDINAVIAN INFLUENCE
Designer Raili Clasen continues the modern spirit of the home in the open kitchen by featuring cabinets by Ziething, Emtek hardware and Caesarstone countertops. The backsplash tiles are by Heath Ceramics; the counter stools are from Nickey Kehoe. “The house has strong character,” says architect Scott Laidlaw. “We didn’t want to lose that but build on it.
OPEN AIR
Designer Paul Wiseman made the atrium living an homage to the homes midcentury roots with a mix of period and era-appropriate furniture.
FINE LINES
The renovation of a 1950s Edward H. Fickett home in Los Angeles by designer Morgan Newfield was all about “comfort and real life,” she says. The coffee table is by Mimi London and the Dmitry and Co. chair is from Una Malan. Artworks include a beach scene by Judith Gigliotti and a special commission by Kristen Giorgi.
CLASSY COMFORT
In the living room of this Nashville home, designer Rachel Halvorson paired Hickory Chair’s Bistro banquette with a vintage club chair in green mohair from Illuminati Antiques in Houston. Flanked by a duo of midcentury brass lamps from Garden Variety Design, a mixed-media piece by Raleigh artist Jason Craighead joins a Bobby McAlpine-designed ottoman by Lee Industries and a walnut cocktail table from Atlanta’s Holland MacRae.
SUBDUED SIMPLICITY
A Royal System shelving unit from Design Within Reach anchors the den. The midcentury lounge chair is from Huit, Cassill’s own shop. She continued the earthy palette in the space, weaving in an RH sofa and a Room & Board coffee table. A vintage Moroccan rug from One Kings Lane brings contrast.
FASHION AND FUCNTION
In the kitchen, plain-sliced walnut cabinetry by Henrybuilt nods to the home’s midcentury roots, as does the fluting on the island. To temper the wood, Sullivan chose heavily veined Calacatta Vagli marble from Da Vinci Marble, which also adds drama to the space. Allied Maker pendants illuminate Capo counter stools by Neri & Hu for De La Espada.
INDUSTRIAL IMPACT
In the laid-back living room of a Tribeca loft designed by Studio DB, an RF Alvarez painting hangs above a custom Prestige sofa dressed in a Holly Hunt fabric. A midcentury Guillerme et Chambron chair, vintage Sven Ellekaer glass coffee table and brass drum table from France & Son join the scene. The custom blue cerused-oak credenza disguises a cocktail bar and mini fridge.
DREAM WORKSPACE
Thanks to its lofty windows, this art studio designed by Beth Webb enjoys ample light and views, while the unadorned concrete floor allows for easy cleanup. A vintage acrylic chair and coffee table, both from Huff Harrington Home & Design in Atlanta, are just two of the midcentury pieces collected by the homeowners over the years.
STATEMENT STUDY
Atop a cowhide-and-bamboo pile rug from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, a plush leather lounge sofa from CB2 and an armchair by Gus Modern from Stitch Chicago turn the office into an extension of the family room. Architect Kevin Toukoumidis collaborated with consultant Anne Kustner on the lighting design.
BOLD AND BRASSY
A pair of midcentury chairs from 1stdibs resting on a Safavieh rug look to a double-height fireplace of copper sheeting that functions as both a massive sculpture and a room divider between the kitchen and the great room. In the gallery-like space at the top of the stairs, artwork by Nancy Willman and David Mayhew draws attention upward.
GRAND ENTRANCE
A Barbara Barry rug defines a sitting area on the lower level. Pieces with a midcentury vibe– a Thayer Coggin sofa in chenille by Perennials and an Eames chair from Design Within Reach–are joined by a coffee table resembling a gear from Ralph Pucci in Los Angeles and an Arteriors side table. The ceiling mount fixture is from Hubbardton Forge; the floor lamp is from Scott + Cooner in Dallas.
