Ocean Views Inspire A Key Biscayne Penthouse’s Design
Equal parts elegant and modern, a serene Key Biscayne penthouse highlights its spectacular ocean views.
Just a short drive over the Rickenbacker Causeway from Miami is the tiny sliver of land known as Key Biscayne. While many come to visit the barrier island, a select few get to live there. Among the lucky, a Peruvian couple whose penthouse apartment boasts enviable views of sun-kissed beaches on one side and the city skyline on the other; the exact backdrop they envisioned for their relaxed getaway.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” says designer Sabrina MacLean, who, along with her mother and design partner Carola Hinojosa, sought to bring the calming feel of the sunshine and sea breeze inside. Faced with stark white walls and a sleek white marble floor, the duo’s first task was softening the surroundings. Furnishings decked out in lush velvet–“Both elegant, and soft and rich in texture,” says Hinojosa–get the job done.
A gray palette adds another layer of serenity, while pieces of artwork provide color and liveliness to the primary living spaces. A painting by Irfan Onurmen dominates the lounge section of the living room, where a quartet of chairs are poised for conversation, while nearby, Artur Lescher’s undulating mesh metal sculpture adds whimsy. As MacLean notes, “Art brings life to a room and is the final touch in any environment.”
