A Spanish Colonial Home Gets A Funky Makeover

The owners turned to Scott Burdick, the tenant of their guest casita and the managing partner of his design firm, to redecorate their living room. “They were looking for a sophisticated mix of old and new,” says Burdick, who combined a 19th-century sabino-wood library table with Jean de Merry wing and leather tub chairs from John Brooks Incorporated. The abaca rug is from The Floor Collection Design. Architect Luis Peris worked on the renovation, which included restoring adobe walls and installing Saltillo tile floors throughout.

Growing up, designer Scott Burdick would often get visits from the “furniture fairy.” In lieu of dollar bills stuffed under his pillow, his interior designer mother furtively placed lamps and other accessories in his room. One such glass lamp sits atop an antique Spanish dresser in his current bedroom, where it shares space with an antique English leather chair with carved swan arms.

Burdick’s slightly offbeat design style is perfectly suited to the 1920s Phoenix guest cottage he calls home, where a bronze sculpture that resembles a crutch hanging over the fireplace somehow makes sense with an old English table-turned-desk and a Japanese flower basket. “There’s no secret to my style,” he says.”I just move things around until they feel right.”

The Spanish colonial structure is part of Casa Encantada, a property owned by landscape designer Brian Kissinger and his partner, Todd McCandless, who restored the main house and guest house along with designing the gardens. The latter features walkways meandering through agaves and succulents and close to 200 trees creating a cooling canopy. And thanks to Plumeria infusing the air with an intoxicating scent and the soothing water sounds of the fountain, the outdoor rooms more than live up to their enchanting moniker.
