Tour A Historic Sag Harbor Home With Modern Flair
Two historic Sag Harbor properties are transformed into a year-round family compound.
The owners of this circa-1790 property in Sag Harbor–a historic whaling village on the east end of Long Island–had been visiting the Hamptons for years before they fell in love with the landmark home and adjacent residence.
Over the course of four years, architect Kathrine “Kitty” McCoy helped the couple transform both homes into a modern, elegant family retreat, while designer Darlene Fridstein reimagined the interiors with vibrant wallcoverings and furnishings throughout the two residences. Luckily, says Fridstein, the wife has great taste. “She knows what she likes, and she has a very good sense of how she wants her home to feel,” she says.
Still, the homeowners wanted to carefully balance their own needs with the property’s rich history as a sea captain’s home. “The vision was to create a compound for multiple generations of both family and friends that respected the historic structures, yet fashion living spaces for a 21st century lifestyle.”
Adorned with a mix of patterned wallpaper, French antiques and family heirlooms, the result is something close to perfection.
