White Walls Go From Boring To Bold In Palm Beach

The great room’s kitchen and tongue-and-groove ceiling were labors of love for builder Eddie Naugle, who worked diligently to master the angles of the vaulted ceiling. Shimmery backsplash tiles by Mosaic House and Mystery White marble on the countertops lend depth to the monochromatic design. The barstools are by Lee Industries.

Bright, white rooms have been dominating the design scene for some time, but that doesn’t mean those spaces have to be boring.

When designer Andrew Howard went to work on a Palm Beach family’s escape, he gave the clients lots of the casual, easy-to-care-for style they craved–but mixed in plenty of surprises.

Howard started by adding white walls in the living room with plenty of texture via a tongue-and-groove ceiling and jute rug. In the dining room, colorful cushions on the vintage chairs and the Dash & Albert rug play up the blues in the Thomas Hager beach print. In the master bedroom, Howard offset white walls with a sky-inspired ceiling in Benjamin Moore’s Colony Green.

Elsewhere, Howard opted for grass-cloth wallpaper and vibrant blue trim in the family room; more grass-cloth and a sky-blue ceiling in the guest bedroom; and a salmon-hued print in a second bathroom. The result is a laidback home in which every space feels as unique as the people who inhabit it.

“When you’re designing a secondary residence,” he says, “it almost needs to read homier than your actual home, since you don’t spend as much time there and it can feel a little unfamiliar.”
