Prep for High Point Market’s fall event is in full swing, and although the event may look a little different this year, the lineup is as engaging as ever. Here’s a sneak peek at the noteworthy designs expected to be on display October 13-21, through the lens of the trends they portend.

DRAMATIC LINES IN NEUTRAL TONES

While color is making a comeback, two brands are using the neutral palette to highlight other elements of design: sweeping lines, forms that convey a sense of motion and the artful interplay of angles.

Working with acclaimed Hong Kong-based architect and designer André Fu, JANUS et Cie brings us Rock Garden. The dynamic, contemporary collection is characterized by soft, flowing curves and thoughtful, angular lines. Its comprehensive ensemble of dining and lounge furnishings communicate serenity and balance in any environment.

Bernhardt Interiors, too, has introduced statement-making, yet tranquil-toned furnishings. The Alexa dining set invites one to enjoy informal elegance. And while you’re in the Bernhardt showroom this Fall Market, don’t miss the Dash chair. Actually, you probably can’t. With a sense of movement in its frame, this piece is sure to turn heads. The Oriole occasional table is also worth hunting down, for how it mixes materials into a stunningly subtle aesthetic.

BROWN IS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

After exploring the full kaleidoscope of finishes over the past decade or so, makers are dialing back in on traditional brown woods accented by brass hardware.

This fall, Modern History will showcase two luscious examples of the look: the Moab console (pictured above), which has a hand-rubbed walnut burl veneer with solid-brass accents, and the Bezier chest, an antique reproduction with dovetailed oak drawers and brass pulls.

YES, WE’LL HAVE ANOTHER

Gorgeous bar cabinets have been high on the list of favorites at each of High Point’s recent markets. October 2020 will bring two delightful new additions.

Inspired by the midcentury geometric abstract paintings of artists like Douglas Herbert Courtenay Auburn and Oli Sihvonen, as well as textiles by Josef and Anni Albers, the Phoenix Drinks cabinet from Julian Chichester is finished in high-gloss white vellum with inlaid details of teal vellum.

The Sheung Wan bar cabinet by Alfonso Marina captures the feel of 1950s Japan. Featuring both doors and drawers, and an interior adapted for a bar, it is made to achieve function and style in tandem. The hand-painted exterior shows landscapes and decorative Japanese scenes, and a marble top completes the design.
