22 Farmhouse-Inspired Homes With A Hint Of Glam

Prioritizing practicality, simplicity, and rustic charm, the farmhouse style continues to be a favorite among homeowners and design professionals alike. See how a few of our favorite farmhouse spaces below elevate the look with modern appeal.

TICKET TO BELGIUM

Taking his inspiration from a Belgian-style farmhouse, architectural designer Patrick Fortelka incorporated minimalist design elements, such as the doors from Windsor Windows & Doors, into the historic-style home. The clients wanted the home to feel private, but not too remote. “It’s like I’m in the countryside,” the wife says, “but still very close to town.”

MAKE IT MODERN

In a nod to the local farmhouse style of Arcadia, architect Milos Minic and general contractor Austin King used wood shake on the roof but kept it modern with a metal seam. The windows from Sierra Pacific along the roofline allow the sun to stream into the great room.

HALL OF FAME

In this Austin residence by architect Hugh Jefferson Randolph, designer Suzie Page furnished the hallway leading to the master bedroom with a vintage Turkish rug and Pablo pendant lighting. Window shades from The Shade Store allow in natural light. Wood flooring throughout is from Adney Custom Hardwood Floors. ATX Design Studio handled the home’s lighting design.

A modern farmhouse in Arcadia takes on an air of sophistication, thanks to clean lines and sleek, mix of stone and stucco.

AIRY WELCOME

Nothing bids a warm welcome quite like a Dutch door. The main entry features a transom-topped version painted Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy. White shiplap paneling by O. B. Williams and an aged iron lantern from Visual Comfort & Co. convey a modern farmhouse vibe.

IN CONTRAST

Nelson designed the dining room to be high-contrast, highly functional and kid-friendly. The farmhouse table is by RH, the side chairs are by Consort, and the outdoor-grade metal Windsor chair is by Rejuvenation. The rug is by Perennials purchased from Sutherland, and the mirror over the mantel is custom. The framed photograph is by Robert Stivers.

A wall of steel windows with three sets of French doors floods the kitchen with natural light, creating a glow that seemingly emanates from white oak floors and marble surfaces. Nuevo chairs and a slim profile farm table with a metal base allows the view to take center stage.

THE RIGHT NOTES

A mix of textures and materials is embraced in the master bathroom, where a Juno bathtub by Wyndham Collection is outfitted with a Sonoma Forge faucet. Quartz countertops top rugged cabinets made from reclaimed snow fence planks. The industrial sconces from Circa Lighting over the sinks are balanced by a basket cloche hanging pendant.

EMBRACE SHIPLAP

Located en route to the family’s living room, a shiplap-paneled front hallway showcases an abstract watercolor work by Atlanta artist Sally King Benedict. Pillows fabricated with Harwood House textiles, through Holland & Sherry, top a modern Windsor bench by Sawkille while a vintage Helena Tynell chandelier sourced from 1stdibs sparkles above.

MODERN FORMS

Shiplap-covered walls, dark gray cabinetry by Abruzzo Kitchen & Bath and open shelving foster a more casual feeling in the pantry. Gebauer Tile & Stone installed the counters, and the oak flooring is by Apex Wood Floors.

FEELS LIKE HOME

In the kitchen, the custom hood, fabricated by Tin Works, Inc., above the Wolf range feels funky and modern, as do brass elements such as the Waterworks faucet above the Kohler farmhouse sink.

Steel-framed windows by SunCoast Iron Doors from Portal Elegance steal the show in the great room, enveloped in Benjamin Moore’s Atrium White and a sisal Merida rug. A midcentury French table rests beneath a Formations chandelier. By the kitchen, chairs in Holly Hunt’s Great Plains linen surround a Robert Kuo table.

A pair of black dome light fixtures by Allied Maker echoes the steel elements throughout the open public spaces, while artwork by Kali Sanders— Reverse Hashtag—references the black-and-white palette used throughout the house. The homeowners chose driftwood gray furnishings for their neutral color, such as the dining table and chairs by RH. Clerestory windows maximize light in the room.

HEART OF THE HOME

The farmhouse-style kitchen is “central to the clients’ family life,” says Callaway, and includes a cozy breakfast area. Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue contrasts with the beadboard painted in the company’s Swiss Coffee shade. Arrayed around the custom rift white oak table are Crate & Barrel chairs.

WELCOME TO THE EVOLUTION

In a couple's farmhouse-style vacation retreat in East Hampton, the front door opens onto the living room, where an Ico Parisi lounge chair from RE Steele, one of a pair, is upholstered in bouclé wool fabric and accented with a fur throw. "Although the color palette and textures were inspired by the beach, we wanted the home to feel comfortable year round," says designer Dan Scotti.

MAKE IT A GRANDE

I wanted to create a depth that made the home feel like it had been here for a while,” says architect Clare Walton, who designed the kitchen cabinets, trimwork and complex ceiling to achieve that effect. A dramatic glass and hammered-bronze chandelier by Newton Gallery lights the Formations dining table and vintage farmhouse chairs from Elsie Green. Glass pendants over the island are by Niche.

FARMHOUSE FLAIR
