A Most Charming Family Home That Captures New England Spirit To Perfection

Connecticut abounds with British charm from village to hillock. But for the clients of designer Lee Ann Thornton, who are anglophiles, down to their pet corgis, a further whiff of Old Blighty was required for their late 1800s Greenwich Colonial.

A Classic Connecticut Beauty That Received A Bold, Highly Personal Refresh

By any measure, the house was a showstopper: a Colonial-inspired grande dame with Palladian windows and a cinematic perch over a glassy harbor with undulating meadows rolling in the distance. And yet, it didn’t quite fit designer Celerie Kemble’s clients. “It was very traditional ‘New England,’” notes the owner of the tastefully furnished Southport, Connecticut, home that she raised her children in before deciding it was time for “a major rejuvenation” better suited to her style.

The primary bedroom sitting area boasts an Elizabeth Dow grass-cloth wallcovering and hand-knotted rug. Artistic Upholstery recovered the chairs and ottomans in a Pindler fabric. The brass table is a Chairish score.

A Grand Waterfront Beauty On The Gold Coast Designed To Be Multigenerational

“The wife told us, ‘We have no ambition to own a vacation house. We want our home to be special, and we think this is the place where we can do that,’” recalls architect Sam Mitchell. To bring their vision to life, he and his team created a residence that’s generously proportioned yet comfortable, with rooms that flow effortlessly from one to another while affording spectacular views east to Long Island Sound.
