This spring, Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud will open his first restaurant on the West Coast, Café Boulud, at the new Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills. To shape the space, Boulud and development firm SHVO tapped French Italian designer Marc Ange.

“Daniel plays with French cuisine in many ways, so French heritage twisted with modernity became an essential ingredient of the design,” explains Los Angeles-based Ange. The sculptural interiors will feature an elegant neutral palette and natural stone elements, as well as Ange’s signature Refuge lamps with their breezy, palm-frond design.

“In the mind of someone from Europe like myself, these tell the story of L.A.,” he says. “Some of the materials and details have been selected to evoke a French bistro or the café tradition, but the softness of the volumes and the earthy colors are, for me, the aesthetic translation of the sunny, peaceful and healthy Californian way of living.”
