Meet The Talent Behind L'Appartement's Effortless Design

Miami design store L’Appartement is curated by Paris transplant Emmanuelle Bernard, a fine artist, interior designer and expert in achieving that elusive, effortless French style. The Wynwood shop’s unique configuration makes shoppers feel right at home, featuring an entryway, living room, dining room and child’s room all arranged and furnished to mimic an actual modern Parisian apartment. We caught up with Bernard to learn more about the talent behind the concept.

L’Appartement feels like home, but what is your actual home interior like?

I deeply love my furniture. I brought some pieces here from France, and I added some new pieces when I arrived in Miami. It took me years to create my personal environment. I like to mix vintage pieces that carry family history with contemporary designs.

What are your most-treasured pieces?

I have an LC6 table by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. It was originally my father’s desk when we lived in Madrid. Then the table traveled to the South of France, became my dining table in Paris and finally followed me to Miami. It has been in the family for 30 years! I like to pair it with the Vertigo pendant lamp by Constance Guisset for Petite Friture. These pieces are from two completely different eras, but they match perfectly.

In addition to European design, L’Appartement also exhibits fine art. Are you a practicing artist as well?

Yes! I have been a painter for more than 20 years — it’s my passion. And when I stopped working as a set designer for the film industry, I started to develop my skills in photography; thanks to my camera, I can always continue to tell stories.

What are your favorite Miami spots for eating, shopping and relaxing?

Wynwood is definitely my go-to destination. This neighborhood is bustling with innovation and design. You can find art at every corner, and every week you can discover a new store or restaurant.
