There’s something about precision and permanence that Brandon Boetto can’t resist. Since 2014, the artisan has shown his appreciation for both at SlabHaus, which produces handcrafted concrete pieces. “Concrete is one of the hardest mediums to master,” Boetto says, “and that difficulty creates a constant need for refinement.” Where struggle occurs, however, so too does growth. Hence SlabHaus’ recent launch of semi-custom tables and tubs. Clients can use the company’s online tool to build tables in a range of shapes and colors. The Cove bathtub, meanwhile, can be customized down to the finish and hue. While concrete may be associated with contemporary design, Boetto contends that the material is quite versatile. “When designed thoughtfully, concrete fixtures can integrate seamlessly into traditional, rustic or contemporary spaces, adding character and a sense of permanence,” he says. “The idea of making something permanent is deeply motivating.”
