In the Hudson Valley, a sprawling estate continues to lure architecture and design aficionados with its Victorian glamour and ethereal natural backdrop. Founded in 1869 by Albert Smiley and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, Mohonk Mountain House began as a 10-room inn—named at the time, Stokes Tavern-which Smiley purchased along with its 280 surrounding acres. Over the past 150+ years, the small inn has evolved into the grand estate it is today, now with accommodations for up to 600 guests.
The property stretches along 1200 acres, and is surrounded by 40,000 acres of forest. As evidence of its age and evolution, its buildings feature an array of architectural character: Victorian, Edwardian and chalet-style elements merge to give the impression of a fairy-tale castle.
In 2025, Mohonk Mountain House added the Lakeview Summerhouse to its spa offerings: an outdoor sanctuary designed with mindfulness, yoga and meditation in mind. Created in collaboration with Robert D. Henry Architects and the Mountain House Rustic Crew, the nature-inspired retreat blends seamlessly into the airy landscape. It offers a prime spot to take in the breathtaking views of the Shawangunk Ridge, Sky Top Tower and serene Lake Mohonk.
