When Rose Tarlow opened as R. Tarlow Antiques in 1976, her reputation for understanding what constituted quality in design became evident and has continued to build over the decades. In the mid 1980’s R. Tarlow Antiques became Rose Tarlow Melrose House and Rose began to reimagine period designs with her own singular vision. She believes that every piece must have its own personality. With a respectful perspective she may reinterpret an antique piece by playing with proportions, changing woods, and perfecting finishes. By taking elements from an original piece such as an unusual curve of a leg, patina or modifying a pieces’ scale she creates a completely unique translation. Her pieces are often eccentrically expressed, but still recognizable in the style of the period proving her belief that antiquity does not always mean perfect and ingenuity often becomes improvement.
At Melrose-House, the craftsmen and restorers of those first antiques are still collaborating and producing with us today and no item emerges from our workshops without meeting our high standards. Everything we create is often being hand crafted, which results in no two pieces ever being completely similar.
Rose’s recent preoccupations vary in style from classic to modern and in type from textiles, dishware, furniture to lighting. The shop also has a constant stream of exciting, decorative, one-of-a-kind pieces discovered by Rose during her travels. In keeping with the depth, sophistication, and history of our past our newest Melrose-House flagship will soon reside on Robertson Boulevard.
